Well said. Unfortunately, just the appearance of my bank of synths can provoke a negative reaction. I play them, I even use the keys themselves (shocking, I know), but keys have seemed to attract all the negative connotations undeservedly.

I’d love to see you do the electronic piece you mention.

It seems to me that technology and music have always been closely bonded. I’m always amazed at the anti-tech comments from musical “purists” (many who don’t even play music). Their tirades always motivate me to remind them about all the technology and developmental iteration that went into the piano, trumpet, saxophone, etc in their time.

Any technology (or instrument) that is not used artistically creates poor results. Some of the technology (auto-tune for example) has definitely been abused and can suck the life right out the music. When used subtly, it enhances without even making its presence known to the listener.

As you know, I’ve very very fond of my music tech, in the studio and live, but I think you still need to put on a show when performing. That’s quite hard to do (but, not impossible I suspect) if you are sat at a laptop. For all the audience knows you could be playing a pre-recorded file while checking your email. It’s this sort of disconnect that plays badly with audiences that I’ve chatted to – they want to see the performer *perform* for the money they’re being paid. And being sat at a laptop doesn’t look like performing (even though it obviously is), it just looks like what they do all day at work.

It’s important to realise that what feels like a performance to the artist might not look like one to an audience. I once (just once!) did a live 9 way diffusion of an electronic piece of mine and it certainly felt like a performance to me – I also rehearsed it for ages! But to the audience it just looked like someone fiddling with a mixer for 10 minutes.

This one will percolate a bit now. It’s a refining process. Actually not unlike the creation of a story. Threads disappear to be replaced by more relevant matter. New characters are introduced. The story takes on more cohesion.

The more I think about it, the more I see that I try to create a narrative even in my short compositions.

I share your setting problem, it’s what drove me away from fantasy. I’d merely dismissed it as endemic in the genre.

What I’m seeing with Martin is quality all around. For a fantasy it’s well grounded in it’s own consistent reality.

I like a good healthy dose of unreality, but when it comes to fantasy, I am pretty much over pseudo-european-faudalism. George RR Martin is a big exception because he’s so good, but I do get tired of how similar so many fat fantasies are in settings.
